The story takes place in one of the many alternative camps. The narrative is told alternately from the perspectives of the Pioneer and Semyon, the protagonists of the story. The focus of the story is all about the mysterious Pioneer's past. How many shifts has he survived, and what events influenced his personality so much that he has such a nasty temper and behavior? How did he discover the ability to travel to other camps, and why does he hide his past so carefully? Is there at least some sense to his actions, or is he really as unhinged as he seems?
