Nishikino Haruto is down in the dumps. He's already twenty-six, but he doesn't have a lot to show for it other than a room in a small, rundown apartment complex, a cruddy job with obnoxious coworkers, and a mountain of regrets.

When Haruto was younger, he was part of a band at school, The Unappreciated Egoists. He had vague dreams of making it big, and standing onstage with his fellow bandmembers: the aloof Ryo, the laidback Taiki, the womanising Kei, and the self-conscious prodigy, Akira...

But Haruto's dreams didn't pan out, and the band eventually dissolved. The Unappreciated Egoists went their own ways, and that was the end of that — until Akira puts together a band of his own years later, which somehow rockets all the way to superstardom.
