Higo, blessed with vast territory, ample troops, and abundant resources, held the upper hand. Hizen, though rich in talented individuals, was disadvantaged by its small territory and other shortcomings.

Under the command of Higo's lord, Imae Yoshinori, his forces attacked fortresses one after another, pushing toward Hizen's main castle. Hizen's army, desperately resisting with Manahime – daughter of their late lord Haguro Genjou – acting as proxy ruler, seemed on the brink of collapse.
