Suzunone Magic Academy is a prestigious educational and research establishment where magic meets science. Established shortly after magic has been first discovered, it has departments dedicated both to the study of magic itself, and to the engineering of devices that use magic.

Kido Yukimura is a student in the Academy's engineering division. He cannot use magic, and his unorthodox engineering approach has landed him in Suzunone Trial, a special training camp where the worst seven students from the academy are chosen every year. Each of those students is given a special personal assignment they have to pass in order to avoid getting expelled, and the assignment Yukimura gets is to "fulfill someone's wish using magic", which, given his inability to use magic, is challenging to say the least. How will he get out this predicament? And whose wish will he choose to fulfill?
